Food Is Medicine Hub

Food is Medicine Hub are establishing a Health Impact Bond: a financial mechanism that attaches monetary value to public health outcomes.

The chronic disease epidemic is not only causing human suffering, it is also taking a huge toll on our healthcare system. 700 billion euros is spent every year in Europe on the management of chronic diseases. That adds up to around 80% of the total healthcare budget. But currently, healthcare payments are tied to services used, rather than outcomes achieved.

Food is Medicine Hub aims to turn this model upside down with healthcare budgets paying for the health outcomes that can be achieve with a plant-based diet. They aim to establish a Health Impact Bond: a financial mechanism enabling institutional payers to attach monetary value to public health outcomes.

This follows their Food Pharmacy pilot programme, the first European randomised control trial researching the impact of providing a plant-based diet, cooking, and health workshops for low-income diabetes patients.

2026 will see the first EU Food is Medicine Conference, built on this year’s successful MVP, to map existing initiatives, align on an EU strategy, and re-grant funding to upcoming projects.
