Pigbassador

What if someone undertook a dramatic physical change to challenge the ethical narrative of animal-based food systems?

The idea

We’ve now seen the first pig heart transplant to a human, but what if someone undertook a more visible transplant?

Through the transplant of a real pig’s nose, a dedicated activist declares that they now identify as a pig. They then use their viral fame to become an ambassador for farmed animals and challenge the ethical narrative of animal-based food systems.

Why it might just work

Such a permanent change would likely generate a lot of media attention (a lot more so than someone simply wearing a prosthetic) and potentially personal fame for the activist. The more the activist built their personal profile – through TV appearances, social media, or even a media career – the bigger platform they would generate for advocacy. It would also highlight the biological closeness of farmed animals and humans and bring that ethical debate to a mainstream audience. Once this fame was achieved, it would allow the conversation to expand to the environmental, health and human impact of our current food production system.

Why it (probably) won't

The surgical challenges of transplanting a pig’s nose to a person means the idea is likely a non-starter – not to even mention the legal and ethical questions. But without it being a permanent physical change, the concept loses it’s media impact. The idea would also require finding someone who probably already needed some form of reconstructive cosmetic surgery and was also a dedicated activist and confident ambassador willing to dedicate their future life and career to the project.

Perhaps in a couple of generations of AI, the pretence could be maintained using AI-generated video for a period of time…
